Clean Eating

I started my clean eating journey after my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer.  I was looking for health, maybe some weight loss, but mostly I just wanted my insides to be in optimal health, so I could avoid finding myself in my mother’s situation.  I felt empowered by clean eating.

If you are new to this, let me share briefly what clean eating is.

Clean eating is simply choosing foods that are as close to natural as possible.  It is whole, “clean” foods such as:

  • Organic grass-fed meats
  • Wild caught seafood
  • Organic eggs
  • Vegetables and fruits*
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Fermented foods (sauerkraut, kimchi, coconut water, kombucha)
  • Healthy fats like olive, coconut, avocado oil, and grass fed butter
  • Raw honey and pure maple syrup (in moderate amounts)

It is avoiding processed foods as much as possible.  So instead of wheat bread, I had sprouted grain bread.  Instead of  pasta, I had chick pea pasta or rice pasta.  It wasn’t about being perfect with it, but just about moving the needle more toward clean, organic non processed food and away from processed junk made of ingredients no person on God’s green Earth can pronounce.

Progress

This worked great for me for a while.  Clean eating was my jam. It did so much for me.

  • I lost 30 + pounds
  • I started sleeping better
  • I reduced my reflux
  • Eliminated my Constipation
  • Less bloating
  • Improved mood
  • Clearer Skin

It was what I needed at that time of my life with coping all that my mom was going through.  I am glad to say that 3 years later she is doing great and her cancer is gone.  But even with her healing, my pursuit of healing my body had begun.  My passion had been stirred and I needed to follow it.

Clean eating and healthy habits alone wasn’t all my body needed.

Mind, Body, Soul Approach

During the time following my start of clean eating, I also became a certified health coach.  This was great because it taught me so much more than just nutrition.  It gave me a complete mind, body, and soul approach to my health transformation.   When you approach your health with concideration to mindset, stress, habits and nutrition, real change is able to happen.   The mind, body, soul approach to health is key to lasting transformation.

Healthy Habits

Some of the healthy habits I developed in the process were:

  • Eating slower
  • Honoring my hunger
  • Honoring my fullness (stopped overeating)
  • Chewing
  • Drinking my water
  • Reduced stress
  • Prayer and Meditation
  • Visualization
  • Stopping the triggers that cause emotional eating
  • Gaining control over my cravings

It has done so much for me, and I love my new view with food, but I needed more.  I had lost over 30 pounds with this way of eating and living, but clean eating and healthy habits alone wasn’t all my body needed.

Here is what I found!

Insuline Resistance

I was experiencing, what I believe was, Insulin Resistance.  Insulin Resistance is when your body can’t respond properly to the insulin it makes. It loses its sensitivity to it.  Over time, this sends up your blood sugar levels. That can even set you up for type 2 diabetes.  My grandmother suffered with that, and I do not want to find myself on that path.

Common Symptoms of Insulin Resistance:

  1. You crave sweets, breads, pasta, and pastries….a lot!
  2. Eating sweets doesn’t relieve your sugar cravings and even increases them.
  3. You become irritable and “hangry” if you miss a meal.
  4. You find yourself needing caffeine to get through the day.
  5. You become lightheaded if you miss a meal.
  6. Eating makes you exhausted and in need of a nap.
  7. It’s difficult for you to lose weight.
  8. You feel weak, shaky, or jittery pretty frequently.
  9. You get agitated, easily upset, or nervous, out of proportion to the reason for these feelings.
  10. Brain Fog, Your memory is not what it used to be/
  11. Your vision is blurry.
  12. Your waist measurement is equal to or larger than your hip measurements.
  13. You have an atypically low sex drive.
  14. You’re always thirsty.
  15. You’re moody and a witch with those you love.

After I learned about insulin resistance and how it could effect my body and my weight loss,  I started looking for ways to reduce my insulin and to bring my body into balance.  If the idea of insulin resistance is new to you read about it here.  I have a great blog on how when we confidently heal our hormones we can start losing weight.

Step 1: Starting the Transition to Clean Lazy Keto

1.  Cut Sugar

I stated with just cutting out sugar.  I already didn’t eat very much sugar, but I had hidden sugars in some of the foods I ate.  This was easier than I thought it would be when I discovered these seven solutions to kicking the sugar habit.  Seriously, sometimes we just have to get control of that sweet tooth, you know what I mean!?

Here is my free mini training on getting rid of the sugar cravings, and kicking the sugar habit for good. Its a short but powerful mini training to give you reasons why we crave it, solutions to master it, and steps to take to move forward in you health.

Cydney - Working mom of 3

“I was hesitant to start “another program” for fear of yet another failure.  I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly Angela was able to help me change that mindset. It means so much to have someone like her by my side because she can actually relate to so many of my struggles. Her passion for helping others was immediately evident and put me at ease speaking openly. She helped me to dig deep and get to the root of so many struggles, some I wasn’t even aware of. I especially liked that she tailored our sessions to my personal needs and goals.  I’ve learned so much about myself in the last 12 weeks that will serve me greatly for years to come. Thanks to Angela I no longer feel powerless.”

Step 2:  Then came the carbs…

After I rid myself of the sugar, I started to lose the bloat and a pound or two, but my body was so out of balance and insulin resistant it needed more.

So, I started cutting out the carbohydrates.  I wasn’t intentionally trying to eat Keto.  I just wanted to eliminate the carbs that where spiking my blood sugar.  I cut out even the “healthy carbs” I had been enjoying in my clean way of eating.

I cut out:

  • Organic Sprouted grain bread
  • Chick pea pasta
  • Organic brown rice
  • Organic quinoa
  • Organic Sweet Potatoes
  • Popcorn popped on the stove (still kind of miss this one)

What carbs are in your diet that are coming to mind that you may need to put on the back burner for a bit?   Don’t sweat it.  I have strategies to help.  Click here for help with that!

This really step reduced down my belly bloat in a manner that made a difference in my jeans.  I could visually see a difference in my mirror, and the way my clothes laid across the stomach was like an answer to prayer.  Wow! Hello feeling sexy

At this point I was eating low carb and high fat (so I wouldn’t be hungry) mostly, but I was still choosing clean fats like like olive oil, coconut oil, or grass fed butter.  I was probably close to keto dieter, but I was lazy about it.

Step 3 – Strict or Lazy Keto

Strict Keto

The strict Keto diet follows a plan where you takin in 80% fat, 20% Protein and 5% Carbs.  The strict Keto dieter, usually has a list of foods that are Keto safe and not safe.  They keep close track over every single gram of protein, fat and carbs that they take inside their body.  To me this is time consuming and takes too much work.

Lazy Keto

For a way of eating to be life long, I shouldn’t have to track it in an app.  So when I say I am a clean (ish) lazy Keto eater.  I mean I try to keep most of my meals organic and clean.  (I still have dairy though since it doesn’t upset my stomach.) and I eat low carb hight fat, but I never track my macros.

No Counting Macros

I may not track my macros on an app, but I do read food labels and have an idea of how many carbs are in a certain type of food.  Siri, will tell me with the click of a button.  I do this just to have an idea in my mind if it is something that will spike my blood sugar and slow down my fat burning.

At the end of the day, I don’t know if I’ve had 20 grams of carbs or 50,, but I know it is in that area most days.  I know this from a small running total in my head.  If I’m off  5-10 grams I don’t stress and just move forward with how my body feels.

Step 4 – A New Way of Eating

Tuned In to the Body

But after transitioning through these stages over the period of a couple of months, I found myself no longer just a clean eater, but a clean slightly lazy Keto eater.

Now, I was still very in tuned with how my body felt and practiced my healthy habits that had helped me have a freedom relationship with food.

I still only eat when I am hungry, and I stop when I am at about a 7 on the hunger scale (10 = stuffed).  I chew carefully and let my meals take their time.  I try to be present and mindful during the meal. That is how I eat.

However, what I eat has transformed a bit.  I now look for high fat low carb meals that are full of clean healthy fats like coconut oil, organic veggies and fruit, grass fed beef and antibiotic free chicken.  Like my former way of clean eating, I don’t stress being perfect, just making progress and honoring my body.

Results

What difference did I see in my body?  Well over the first 3 weeks I had a loss of 8 pounds.  Eight pounds that haven’t moved off my body in prior over 6 months.  Praise God the plateau has broken.

About Me

Hi!!   I am Angela Naumann, the Curvy Woman’s Health Coach.   I have lived my life as a plus size woman, and I understand the journey and struggles that comes from yo-yo dieting and binge eating.  I know how it feels to have jeans that won’t button, and shirts that gape at the belly.  I know the internal battle that comes with feeling confident in yourself when you feel out of control with your body.  I have felt that way for 20 years of my life.

But I found plus size weight loss is possible for me.  I knew I longed for a few key things in my life.  I wanted to not constantly think about food.  I wanted to look in the mirror and feel confident, sexy and love the vision smiling back.

What people are saying….

“I’m nearing the end of my 12 week program, and although I was hesitant to open up and dig deep, I’m glad I did this! Angela has helped me peel back the layers to discover what’s been holding me back in progressing in my health journey. My mindset has done a complete 180! I don’t let food control my life, and it no longer hinders other areas outside of my health. I feel confident in making healthy choices, and that hasn’t always been the case. I’m beyond thankful for Angela and the encouragement she has given me. Putting all of her practices in place have truly helped me transform my health, and I’m thrilled for a healthier and happier me!”
