I get it. I was obese and just seemed to gain weight with each diet I went on. I was trying. Really I was. I was eating salads and “rabbit food” while my thin coworkers were enjoying their pizza and burgers. It was so irritating.
I was constantly thinking “What was wrong with me.” I was doing the “diet” things. I was consistent. I was restricting, I was exercising. It made no difference. I had no idea why I couldn’t lose weight. I was beginning to get hopeless.
But as life often does, it through me a curvy ball when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was my wake up call to keep working on my health. It has taken years to get where I am and it hasn’t been easy. But I have learned so much along the way. That’s why I am here. My journey is an amazing one, but a curvy woman’s journey is different that a thin woman’s. So to all my curvy sisters out there. I am writing this for you.
I get you girl!!
I really get the struggle. I have flaws, I’ve broken the unspoken laws, paid the dues, bared the scars, learned the lessons, and I still have weight to lose on top of the 30+ I’ve already lost.
But that’s life. That’s my journey. So with my head held high, I’m on this journey to be the best version of myself. I’m excited to grow and expand my life. I’m blessed that God lets me share it with you.
Today I’m sharing with you 7 reasons I found for Why I could not lose weight.
7 Reasons Why You Can’t Lose Weight
Sugar and Refined Carbs
When you are taking in a lot a refined carbs or sugar, you are probably taking in products that don’t contain lots of fiber, fat or protein.
Fiber, fat and protein slow down sugar absorption, so when those nutrients aren’t present, your blood sugar shoots up really fast, like to the top of a roller coaster.
Now at the top of this roller coaster, your brain is alerted. Your brain uses about 50% of your blood sugar at any given time, so any drastic rise or fall in your blood sugar levels cause your brain flip out.
So when you’re blood sugar spikes up, your brain and your body aren’t happy – to YOUR body THIS IS AN EMERGENCY. So what does your body do? Your pancreas secretes the hormone INSULIN to bring your blood sugar back down.
Here’s the problem. We have spent a lifetime eating a lot of high-sugar, processed products – hey, I grew up in the 70s and 80s and that what was popular then – so insulin has gotten really used to doing its job too well.
When insulin is sent out, it doesn’t just bring your blood sugar back down into balance, there’s often too much insulin secreted, and our blood sugar dips way down. And that’s the blood sugar crash you feel after the sugar high – that shaky, spaced out, uncomfortable feeling.
So you’ve had a blood sugar crash – now what does your body crave when you are down there, in the middle that nasty crash? MORE SUGAR and CARBS!
And what happens to our blood sugar when we eat the sugar again? It goes up, up, up – back to the top of that roller coaster. And so the up and down cycle continues.
Has anyone experienced that before? How does it feel?
If you are a plus size woman and constantly on this rollercoaster, you can easily find your body experiencing some level of insulin resistance. This Is when blood sugar levels are persistently high. When this happens the body’s cells stop responding to insulin as effectively. This is known as insulin resistance.

We have all heard how stress can effect our heart and blood pressure. Well it is equally as bad on the waist line.
Stress is the reverse of relaxation. Ask yourself when do you feel stressed? Most of the time we feel stress when we are moving too fast and not taking time to recharge.
If you’ve worked for a stronger metabolism and have been trying to lose weight but have not been able to, there’s likely one basic reason. YOU ARE MOVING TOO FAST!
When we start burins the candle at both ends and living life in high stress or even consistent low level stress. Our body is effected.
You see, stress changes the cortisol levels in the body, and when they are out of control, our body will stop burning fat and our metabolism will slow.
Think of it like this:
- Stress = bad digestion, cortisol goes up and the body stores fat, adrenal fatigue kicks in.
- Relaxation = healthy digestion
- Stress = No weight loss, poor health, and low energy.
- Relaxation helps you reset your metabolism and lower cortisol. It is that simple.
Sister, stress makes you fat and relaxation makes you thin. So, it is time to start looking at de-stressing as a weight loss tool.

You don’t think you can. For whatever reason, you have stopped believing that weight loss is possible for you. If that is the case for you then that is is reason that you haven’t lost weight. The body can’t go where the mind doesn’t go.
Mindset is key. If you don’t believe it is possible for you, then it will never happen. There are a few techniques I use with my clients to help them break this old mindset and develop a new healthy mindset that believes.
1. Emotional Brain Training.
So what is emotional brain training? Well, according to their website, “EBT is a science-based program, that integrates advances in neuro science and stress physiology that rewires patterns of anxiety, depression, overeating, and unhealthy habits by using practical, easy to implement tools.” Now, most of us try to think our way out of our problems, but the thinking does not rewire that emotional circuit.This is also why advice only is not effective. Because the emotional brain needs to be rewired. And EBT is a way you can control that rewiring yourself. Click here for my EBT Check in that teaches you how to rewire the negative to a positive.
Similarly, using visualization or mental rehearsal can retrain the brain. Using the mind-body practice of guided-imagery visualization is uniquely suited to retraining your body to be thin, and your brain to accept that it is possible.
This is because it works from the inside out to change your biochemistry and neural pathways.
How You Eat
How you eat can be just as important as what you eat! What I am talking about here is mindful eating.
Mindful eating is an approach to food that focuses on individuals’ sensual awareness of the food and their experience of the food. It can look like listening to your body’s hunger and fullness signals. It is eating foods that nourish our bodies and are sensually pleasing (Think satisfaction through the 5 senses). It is being present in a meal vs. multitasking. It can also look like enjoying the conversation with friends and family vs. binge eating alone to relieve an emotional trigger.
Mindful eating is being incorporated into behavior change programs. It is a large part of my own personal growth on my weight loss journey. I spent many years overeating while watching TV. Rushing through a meal as I stood in the kitchen, not even bothering to sit down. I have shared this before in my blog, Unique Ways to Lose Weight. Think this could be you? Check it out.
When looking to lose weight, getting more sleep is not something most people even think about. Yet, this is one of the best things you could do for yourself.
Sleep is an act of self love in my book.
I spent over 15 years never sleeping through the night. It recked my health.
I wouldn’t lose weight no matter what I did, I was moody, craving junk and just existing day to day. Never fully living life and enjoying my kids, family, friends or even myself.
When we’re fully rested following a deep sleep of around 7-8 hours our hormonal balance is in sync with our body.
But, when we sleep less than 7 hours, this fine balance act of our hormones is thrown out the window.
This can result in the Leptin and Ghrelin (hunger hormones) to stop working optimally.
Thus, when we are lacking in the sleep department, we can often overeat and even eat when we aren’t physically hungry.
I spent 20 years at least yo-yo dieting. So sisters, I can relate to the bubbling frustration that the up and down weight loss and gain has festered inside you.
In all my years of helping people lose weight and build confidence , the Curvy Woman Yo-Yo dieter is at their wits end looking for a solution.
Here is what has happened:
- They stick to one diet for a couple of weeks or so but the cravings get the better of them.
- They lose a bit of weight, but stop what they’ve done only to put more fat back on than before they started.
- Then the guilt and shame kick in to help make this experience even tougher. But these Curvy Ladies who “Yo-Yo Diet” are doing more harm to themselves than just building frustration and extinguishing hope
